Disney's Snow Full Defrosted

Retitled Frozen and due in the finish of 2013It's experienced ice at Disney for any very long time, nevertheless it now seems the thaw is approaching Uncle Walt's version in the Snow Full, which has just acquired a November 2013 release date, beneath the new moniker Frozen. That whole clever "thaw" line doesn't go a lengthy way when coupled with that title, but give to us a relaxation, right? It's Christmas. The story, clearly, is Hendes Christian Andersen's and involves Kay, whose ideas are twisted when his heart and eyes are pierced by shards from the evil troll mirror. He's then under your own accord kidnapped with the Snow Full, who travels the earth while using winter several weeks. Kay's playmate, neighbour and sweetheart Gerda however, still thinks in him and sets on the legendary pursuit to retrieve him within the Snow Queen's structure.Animator Glen Keane (The Little Mermaid, Beauty As Well As The Animal, Aladdin) was concentrating on the project the moment about 10 years ago, but abandoned it towards Rapunzel, which emerged this year as Twisted. Adjective-based names are apparently very popular for Disney's current crop of fairytale animations.Formerly it absolutely was intended just like a hands-attracted affair like the Princess As Well As The Frog, there's however no indication at this time of whether that's still the problem, or indeed, in the current team behind the film. That which you know for several is the date of November 13, 2013 that Frozen just nabbed, was formerly restricted to Pixar and Bob Peterson's as-yet untitled Dinosaur movie. What's happening with this particular then?

SHOCKER! Ex-CAA Vet Agent Rand Holston Hired By Paradigm

EXCLUSIVE: Paradigm has landed Rand Holston, the 28-year CAA veteran agent who exited that agency late last month. Holston will bolster the motion picture lit and financing departments and gives Sam Gores’ agency a well established dealmaker who played on a high level as a film agent at CAA. For Paradigm’s motion picture business, Holston is the highest-profile addition since Paradigm got close in courting the late Ed Limato when he left ICM, only to see that iconic dealmaker choose WME as a landing place for himself and his star clients. At CAA, Holston had a strong list of writer and director clients, and the immediate question will be who stays and who goes. That list includes Stephen King, Rob Reiner, Wolfgang Petersen, Robert Towne, John Moore, Marshall Herskovitz, Jordan Kerner, Ed Zwick, Jim Ivory, Bruce Robinson and Jon Avnet. There will be a chase for those clients, and Holston’s impact will be partly measured by which ones stay with him. But he will also put Paradigm in the conversation for signings and business they might not otherwise have had a shot at in the past. Paradigm had been the frontrunner for Holston since Deadline revealed that the agent was leaving CAA and taking meetings. Holston’s hiring is being announced internally right now. “Rand is an outstanding agent with an impeccable reputation,” Paradigm chairman and CEO Gores says. “Our philosophies relating to the entertainment business are very compatible and we are all thrilled that he chose Paradigm.” Holston will work in the motion picture department and with the Motion Picture Finance Group and its head Andrew Ruf. Said Holston: “Paradigm has a great reputation, and after getting to know Sam and his senior group of agents, it was clear this would be a great fit for me,” Holston said. “Sam has orchestrated a tremendous growth story for Paradigm, which has included skillfully blending new agents into its culture in a way that everyone thrives. I look forward to playing a productive part of Paradigm’s continued growth and success.”

Sweden's Ostlund preps 'Tourist'

GIJON, Spain -- Swedish helmer-scribe Ruben Ostlund is prepping "Tourist," his follow-up to breakthrough hit "Play." A Swedish-French language movie, "Tourist" is set up at Ostlund's Gothenburg-based Plattform Produktion. Plattform is in talks for Philippe Bober's Coproduction Office to co-produce and handle "Tourist's" international sales, as on "Play," Ostlund said at Spain's Gijon Festival, which kicked off its 49th edition Friday. Plattform's Erik Hemmendorff and Marie Kjelson will produce. The Swedish Film Institute and Swedish regional fund Film I Vast, which has put up development costs, are backing "Tourist." A three-part movie, "Tourist" highlights "behavior that people have seen in others -- mostly in conflict areas -- think they'll never resort to, and then have to admit that they have that side to their character," Ostlund told journalists at Gijon. One part includes what Ostlund hopes to be the most spectacular avalanche in film history. It turns on a happy Swedish family -- father, mother, two kids -- holidaying in the French Alps. An avalanche sparks a spontaneous act of cowardice from the father, who can't understand why he reacted that way. Ostlund, a professional ski filmmaker, is currently working on the screenplay. Plattform aims to trigger the avalanche this winter, combining shots with bluescreen vfx. Principal photography is skedded for spring, Ostlund told Variety. A discomfiting chronicle, based on true events, of five black boys robbing three white kids -- "the idea was to open up discussions about something which people have difficulties talking about, Ostlund said -- "Play" was one Competition standout during Gijon's early running. Valeria Donzelli's French B.O. breakout "Declaration of War" confirmed its overseas potential, drawing applause and even tears at a press screening. Belgian Bouli Lanners "The Giants" elicited glowing press plaudits: "A work of genius," reported Asturias' El Comercial. Playing Monday, Gijon's first major world preem, "Iceberg," from Spaniard Gabriel Velazquez ("Sud Express"), proved a contemplative three-story coming-of-age drama, set beside Salamanca's placid Rio Tormes, in which three adolescents face their first character-shaping big problems in life. Underscoring a new industrial model in Spain of ratcheting down budgets to limit exposure to a severely contracting local market, Velazquez said that, while he took a risk going into production on "Iceberg" before closing its budget, the drama was eventually fully-financed by incentives. In the Rellumes sidebar, the near phantasmagoric docu "Hollywood Talkies," from Barcelona's Oscar Perez and Mar Ribot -- turning on the creation of Spanish-language version of early sound pics -- also had its fans. "Copito," a 3D live-action/toon movie from Filmax, one of Spain's foremost forces in feature film animation, world preems later this week. Fest fetes eclectic Austrian helmer Michael Glawogger ("Whore's Glory," "Contact High"), Bertrand Bonello ("House of Tolerance") and festive NY-based indie cineaste Marie Losier, who presented her feature "The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye." Spaniard Montxo Armendariz -- whose films have nearly always twinned critical and commercial success in Spain -- will pick up the Nacho Martinez National Cinema Prize. Fest closes Saturday with thriller "The Woman in the Fifth," from Pawel Pawlikowski, whose "The Last Resort" topped Gijon in 2000. Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com

Michael Lombardo to Be Honored By Saban Free Clinic (Q&A)

HBO programming president Michael Lombardo will be honored with the Saban Free Clinic's Leadership Award on Nov. 21 (which historically means he agreed to twist arms, fill tables and arrange for talent) at the organization's 35th annual dinner. It has Bill Maher performing and Entourage's Jeremy Piven as emcee. Lombardo is helping out at a crucial time for the clinic. Depending on how the Supreme Court rules, health care reform could be on the way. But the clinic feels it will have a key role serving those who fall through the cracks. Lombardo recently toured the clinic and THR asked him about its work and the upcoming dinner. The Hollywood Reporter: Why are you doing this? Michael Lombardo: First of all, Ellen Hoberman, Dana Walden and Sam Fischer are enormously persuasive. And the Free Clinic does vital, critical work. There are so many causes out there, but when you walk into the clinic you see peoples lives being changed. There aren't many places where you see that in action. THR: You went to the clinic, what impressed you? Lombardo: What's unbelievable about the space is it belies the misconception of what a "clinic" should feel like. I had in mind going to something akin to County General. And it was just the opposite. It's a welcoming, warm environment where people are treated respectfully. It's like a for-profit hospital. THR: But it's a relatively small charity. Lombardo: What's unfortunate is they can't provide more. They don't have the resources to give medical care to everyone who needs it. There's something like 3 million people who don't have health insurance in L.A. County. THR: Does anything in particular strike you while being there? Lombardo: Once or twice a week they have volunteer dentists from UCLA providing dentures to people. I know it's not life and death, but it makes the difference between having a job and not having one. I was really touched by that. THR: You feel a responsibility to help with this type of dinner? Lombardo: It comes with the blessings that come to you in life. Also, it's amazing the number of people in this industry who are not just writing checks to the Clinic but are really involved with it. I worked on Wall Street for a little while; I have friends in other industries, but there's a philanthropic character that runs through this industry that's unusual. It makes me enormously proud to be a part of it. THR: You have good health coverage at HBO? Lombardo: Yes, we do. But if I didn't, I'd be happy to walk in the Free Clinic. FX's motorcycle-gang drama has sometimes soft-pedaled the Beauty and the Beast vet's character, SAMCRO prez Clay Morrow, depicting him as more of an arthritic pussycat than a ferocious tiger. Watercooler: Is American Horror Story's Tate a Ghost?

Evan Peters, Jessica Lange and Frances Conroy For just about any teen, that kid sure seems being an old soul. Maybe like he's! Last evening, American Horror Story ended its crazycakes two-part Halloween episode getting a significant hint in regards to the mythology in the Harmons' "Murder House." Apparently, in the event you die round the premises, you stick to the premises. Note Ben's crazy zombie mistress, the bitchy former entrepreneurs, the demon baby inside the basement, and typically the most popular two-faced maid, Moira. Only the feast of Samhain allows these ghosts to wander in the grounds and acquire their errands done or do no matter the undead frequently after they undertake corporeal form. So let's apply that "home is where the horror is" logic to Violet's unstable love. Until Halloween, we'd only seen Tate inside, inside the yard or round the front pavement. Once October 31 folded around, he was off meeting Ben inside the town square for coffee and taking Crimson around the beach date. Coincidence? Maybe. Tu seras mon fils

A Universal Pictures Intl. France discharge of a Epithete Films presentation and production, in colaboration with Orange Cinema Series, Manon. (Worldwide sales: Other Position Pictures, Paris.) Created by Frederic Brillion. Directed by Gilles Legrand. Script, Legrand, Delphine p Vigan. With: Niels Arestrup, Lorant Deutsch, Patrick Chesnais, Anne Marivan, Nicolas Bridet, Valerie Mairesse, Jean-Marc Roulot, Urbain Cancellier.Aging dad issues prove a headier concoction than any vintage created in a French chateau in "Tu seras mon fils," an elegant, full-bodied family drama from Gallic scribe-helmer Gilles Legrand ("Malabar Princess"). Grouchy character thesp Niels Arestrup ("A Prophet," the approaching "War Equine") is ideally cast because the coldhearted, excessively practical who owns a Saint-Emilion vineyard who views his milquetoast boy an unacceptable successor -- though not for insufficient trying. In your area, the pic grew to become the very first surprise hit of harvest season and it is glossy and mainstream enough to lure distribs offshore. It is also a shoo-set for a California-set remake. Typically structured and performed, the film immediately creates its primary conflict between widower and father Paul p Marseul (Arestrup) and the grown-up boy, Martin (Lorant Deutsch), who lives inside a separate wing from the family's chateau together with his wife (Anne Marivan). Bookish Martin performs exceptionally well in the administrative aspect, but his demanding old guy has always stored him from the wine making process, employment that needs rigor, creativeness and technical understanding in equal doses. Since Paul required within the family biz from their own father at 17, he's been accountable for creating the chateau's yellows and whites -- the second a rarity in Saint-Emilion -- together with his right-hands guy, Francois (Patrick Chesnais). Usual for Paul's controlling m.o., he really discovers that Francois is crictally ill before even Francois does, forcing the wine maker to think about who'll help him using the approaching vintage. Though he experiences the motions of providing the willing Martin an opportunity -- something Paul does a minimum of just as much for the opportunity to mock him for his every mistake regarding train him something -- the wine maker has additionally privately approached Francois' golden-boy boy, Philippe (Nicolas Bridet), who immediately quits his position at Coppola wines in California to come back home when he listens to about his father's condition. You will find no large surprises available when it comes to where this setup is headed, particularly when thinking about, according to press materials, the Paul-Philippe story was partially inspired by Hal Holbrook's paternal affection for Emile Hirsch in "In to the Wild." However the pic's pleasures are nevertheless numerous, beginning using its gifted cast. Deutsch, his Everyman face hiding a fundamental tenacity, is pitch-perfect because the boy that has the readiness although not always the capability to impress his father the thesp's antagonistic chemistry with Arestrup rings true. Opposite Deutsch, newcomer Bridet constitutes a strong impression as Martin's childhood friend-cum-sudden rival, a gifted prodigal boy who, paradoxically, needs to lose their own father to understand his potential. Chesnais and Arestrup, who've the marketplace on irritated French codgers virtually cornered, also deliver strong turns, with Arestrup precisely embodying another almost-heartless guy. His Paul really has affection just for his work his tragedy is always that he can't make wine without the assistance of others. Legrand and co-scripter Delphine p Vigan cleverly give a soupcon of backstory including Paul's own late father. This, along with Paul's rocky relationship together with his offspring and Francois and Philippe's equally complicated bond, makes "Tu seras mon fils" a movie about complex father-boy associations generally and also the unfair anticipation and burdens they've created on sides. Tech package is smooth smooth, in the glossy widescreen lensing (together with a spectacular helicopter shot of the vehicle crash among the vines) towards the classical score. Title means "You'll Be My Boy."Camera (color, Panavision widescreen), Yves Angelo editor, Andrea Sedlackova music, Armand Amar production designer, Aline Bonetto costume designer, Tess Hammami seem (Dolby Digital/DTS), Pierre Gamet effects, Christian Rivet stunt coordinator, Roland Neunreuther assistant director, Hubert Engammare casting, Constance Demontoy. The Black List Launching Web Site That Tracks Most Popular Scripts In Real Time

EXCLUSIVE: Film executive Franklin Leonard has maintained The Black List for the past six years to champion hundreds of talented screenwriters andunproduced scripts.Well over125screenplays have been made into movies, and they’re responsible for 20 Oscars and roughly $10 billion in worldwide grosses. Today Leonard expands The Black List by launching awebsite that tracks Hollywood’s most popular scripts in real time.Blcklst.combases its info onpolling hundreds of high level studio and production company executives who are directly involved in moviemaking. The subscriber-only web site ($20 a month) will expand the pool of movie professionals to include agents and directors who will identify the scripts they like best.Blcklst.com algorithms will sort them by a number of criteria: most popular, and most popular dramas or comediesof the past week, month or whatever. For example, on Tuesday night, I broke news of the sale to Warner Bros ofThe Imitation Game about math genius Alan Turing. It has been the most popular available new script among several hundred beta-test users of Blcklst.com over the past couple of months. One thing, though,Leonard’s website will not be open to the general public, however. Verified membership will be expanded to include agents, managers, directors, actors, and writers who will rate scripts according to what they like best. Additionally, the verified subscription format is designed to prevent data manipulation. Interestingly, there will be no “worst of” categories. (Gee where’s the fun if there’s no trashing or bashing?) The parameters are strictly based on what members like best and why. Leonardhopes the site will expand on what The Black List has already accomplished and help make the movie market more effective by pinpointing great screenplays with creative and profit potential as well as attract major talent. In addition, The Black List has brought in a pair of bloggers under the blog.blcklst.com umbrella, Scott Myers at gointothestory (now gointothestory.blcklst.com) and Xander Bennett at Screenwriting Tips… You Hack (now screenwritingtips.blcklst.com). Bennett’s book based on his blog of the same name went on sale today from Focal Press. For the uninitiated, The Black List isLeonard’s hot unproduced screenplay pecking order which he began in 2004 and compiled every year from the suggestions of hundreds of film executives, who each contributes the names of up to ten of their favorite scripts that were written in, or are somehow uniquely associated with, that calendar year and will not be released in theatersthat calendar year, either. The Black List catapults dozens of scripts into production and screenwriters out of oblivion. Diablo Cody’s Juno, Nancy Oliver’s Lars And The Real Girl, Scott Neustader’s and Michael Weber’s 500 Days Of Summer, are just some of the screenplays which appeared on The Black List and then were made. I’ve noticed that it’s also a “big dick” measuring contest for the Hollywood agencies and their motion picture lit departments. Problem is, some screenwriters think this list isn’t on the up-and-up and accuse junior studio execs and assistants along with self-interested agents and managers of getting together to push their own clients on projects even if already abandoned.

Oscar rejects Puerto Rico's foreign-lingo film entry

Despite having sent 11 pics for foreign-language film Oscar consideration since 1986, Puerto Rico has been shut out of the race this year because of its status as a U.S. protectorate. However, the Dominican Republican won an appeal to get its pic into consideration. "We wanted to clear up an inconsistency that allowed a U.S. territory to compete in a category meant for countries outside the U.S.," said AMPAS chief operating officer Ric Robertson. "We told them in our letter last year that 2010 would be the last time they could submit an entry." According to Puerto Rico's film commissioner Mariella Perez, the Academy notified her in August 2010 of the rule. "After asking it to reconsider, the Academy replied that its decision was final, but that Puerto Rico could apply for any of the other categories," Perez said. "I notified the filmmakers of this new rule but they sent their film anyway." Naturally, the Academy rejected helmer Sonia Fritz's Spanish-language "America," starring Edward James Olmos, Tony Plana and Lymari Nadal. Puerto Rican pundits allege the Academy bowed to pressure from Hispanic filmmakers in other states who felt that Puerto Rico was being given a favored status. They question why Puerto Rico is recognized as an independent country in sporting events. "Different organizations have different rules," said Robertson. Puerto Rico has been submitting entries since Marcos Zurinaga's 1986 pic "La gran fiesta" (The Big Party) was the hopeful in the 59th Academy Awards in 1987. In 1989, Jacobo Morales' "What Happened to Santiago" became the first local pic to clinch a nom. In 2010, Rafi Mercado's "Miente" (Lie) vied for a foreign-lingo film Oscar nom. Fritz will still have a chance at a foreign-lingo Oscar slot through the Dominican Republic pic she co produced, "La Hija Natural" (Love Child) by Leticia Tonos. This was initially rejected by the Academy over a technicality but was accepted after the Dominican Republic appealed. The country had failed to submit the names of its selection committee members to the org before the Oct. 3 deadline. The 84th Academy Awards will be held Feb. 26 at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood. ABC and NBC are in a tight battle for third, with the Alphabet off slightly vs. last year and the Peacock down about 10%.CBS is the clear leader in adults 25-54 and total viewers. Most impressive newcomers after multiple airings are Fox's "New Girl" and CBS' "2 Broke Girls." ABC's "Revenge" and "Pan Am" held up well enough in their second outings to suggest they could be around a while, as did CBS dramas "Person of Interest" and "Unforgettable." And NBC has something of a spark on Wednesday with "Up All Night."Peacock has already pulled the plug on "The Playboy Club," while others not looking so hot are ABC's "Charlie's Angels" and NBC's "Free Agents" and "Prime Suspect." Looking at the Nielsens for the Sept. 26-Oct. 2 frame, CBS led in adults 18-49 with a 3.2 rating/9 share, with Fox a solid second (2.8/8) and NBC (2.4/7) and ABC (2.4/6) tied for third. The Eye won by 3 shares over Fox in adults 25-54 and ran away in total viewers (12.2 million to 8.7 million for ABC).For CBS, the Ashton Kutcher-led "Two and a Half Men" held up well in its second week (7.4/17 in 18-49, 20.52m) -- the frame's No. 1 show in 25-54 (8.7/18) and total viewers -- and still looked strong in its third try. TV's No. 1 comedy block included "How I Met Your Mother" (4.5/12, 10.50m), the timeslot debut of "2 Broke Girls" (4.6/12, 11.75m) and the season opener of "Mike & Molly" (4.8/11, 13.86m)."Hawaii Five-0" (3.2/8, 11.26m) topped its drama competish in demos too, as the Eye won the 10:30 p.m. half-hour leading into the late local news on all five weeknights in adults 25-54.In their second weeks, rookies "Unforgettable" (2.5/7, 12.43m), "Person of Interest" (2.7/7, 12.51m) and "A Gifted Man" (1.2/4, 8.18m) dropped off in the standard 10%-15% range. But one newbie, Thursday half-hour "How to Be a Gentleman" (2.7/8, 8.98m), could be in danger after its preem last week lost a big chunk of its lead-in from "The Big Bang Theory" (4.9/15, 14.74m)."NCIS" was the week's No. 1 drama (4.2/12, 19.51m), beating Fox's "Glee" head-to-head by 2 shares in 18-49. Excluding sports, CBS claimed six of the top eight programs among adults 18-49 and seven of eight in 25-54.Fox has seen impressive second-week holds for its newbies, including "New Girl" (4.5/11, 9.28m), down just 7%. The laffer built on its lead-in from a declining but still potent "Glee" (3.7/10, 8.60m) and stood as Tuesday's No. 1 show in 18-49."X Factor," also down 7% week to week, won its two-hour blocks on Wednesday (4.1/11, 11.86m) and Thursday (5.7/15, 13.45m), losing in 18-49 only to "Modern Family" and "Big Bang Theory." And "Terra Nova" opened with solid but unspectacular numbers (3.1/8, 9.22m) however earned points by holding up well in its second outing.ABC had only three of the top 25 shows in 18-49, with "Modern Family" (5.7/15, 13.45m) up vs. last year while vets "Grey's Anatomy" (3.6/9, 10.20m) and "Dancing With the Stars" (3.3/8, 16.23m) were down.Among rookies, "Charlie's Angels" looks to be in trouble (1.5/4, 7.11m), but "Revenge" (2.7/7, 8.54m) and "Pan Am" (2.6/6, 7.76m) are faring better. And in its debut, Wednesday comedy "Suburgatory" (3.3/9, 9.81m) built on its lead-in from "The Middle" (2.7/8, 8.68m).NBC was again saved by "Sunday Night Football" (7.7/19, 18.90m for Jets-Ravens), the week's No. 1 show in 18-49. Its only otheronly other top-25 show was "The Office" (3.5/9, 6.70m), while the Thursday comedy's 9:30 p.m. leadout "Whitney" (2.5/6, 5.40m) dropped off in its second week but still looked OK. Second-year Wednesday drama "Harry's Law" (1.2/3, 7.63m) was the net's most-watched entertainment series, but is a demo laggard following the even lower-rated new half-hour "Free Agents" (1.0/3, 3.07m). Leading into "Free" was the new "Up All Night" (2.1/6, 5.32m), which dropped 13% week to week but is still a bright spot.Univision was fifth in 18-49 (1.7/5), winning Friday for the fifth straight week. And CW continues to show sizable declines even though newcomers "Hart of Dixie" (0.8/2, 1.88m in its preem) and "Ringer" (0.9/2, 1.98m in its third week) built on their lead-ins, and Thursday's "The Secret Circle" (1.0/2, 2.12m) is a good fit with "The Vampire Diaries" (1.3/4, 2.74m). On Monday of this week, CBS rolled as "Two and a Half Men" (6.2/14, 17.71m) declined by 16% but is still likely to be the No. 1 entertainment series of the week in demos. And "2 Broke Girls" (4.5/11, 11.42m) matched its "How I Met Your Mother" demo lead-in (4.5/12, 10.39m). At Fox, "Terra Nova" (3.1/8, 8.73m) retained its week-ago demo aud, and "House" kicked off its eighth season in a new 9 o'clock timeslot (3.9/9, 9.78m), down just 7% from last year.ABC's "Dancing With the Stars" (3.1/7, 16.56m) declined further, while NBC's "The Sing Off" was up a tick (1.8/4, 4.89m).On the sports side, ESPN's "Monday Night Football" (4.5/11 in 18-49, 10.84m for Colts-Buccaneers) topped TBS' baseball playoff game between the Tigers and Yankees (2.1/5, 6.05m). Netflix Adds Lilyhammer To TV Line-Up

MIPCOM: Ted Sarandos, chief content officer of Netflix, announced in Cannes this afternoon that Netflix is adding Norwegian-produced TV show Lilyhammer to its original programming line-up. Stevie Van Zandt who so memorably played mob consigliore Silvio Dante in The Sopranos plays a Mafioso who testified against his former Mafia boss in NY and winds up relocated to the Norwegian countryside as part of the Witness Protection Program. Lilyhammer will premiere on Netflix. Sarandos, who was being interviewed by Miramax CEO Mile Lang, said that 60% of viewing on Netflixs newly-separated streaming business is for TV episodes, with Mad Men and Breaking Bad being most popular. Deadline understands that Netflix, which is on the hunt for original programming, has also had talks about reviving Arrested Development with 20th Century Fox TV. Netflix surprised Hollywood in March by outbidding major TV networks for the rights to the David Fincher/Kevin Spacey drama House Of Cards. Lang, meanwhile, said that Miramax is talking to potential partners around the world about the distributor having its own cable network showing the 700 movies in its archives. Miramax signed a long-term deal for its content with Netflix in May, and is partnering with Facebook to launch Miramax Experience, an app which will allow users worldwide to watch its movies. Lang was keen to talk up how Miramax is reinventing itself as an anytime/anywhere distributor. In a way Id like to believe our company is a bit more Silicon Valley than Hollywood in that respect, he said. Netflix angered consumers in July when the company said it would split its video streaming and DVD rental services increasing prices by 60% for those who wanted to continue to have both. Asked as to the thinking behind the move, Sarandos said: As we become a global brand, and a streaming global brand, the DVD-by-mail business is strictly U.S. and domestic. Sarandos said that Netflix was looking for global rights for movies and TV shows, rather than U.S.-only deals like its Starz agreement. He also talked about promoting TV shows that are popular in one territory to Netflixs global viewers. What kind of shows would he be looking for? If you want to see what people really want, look at what theyre stealing, he said.

Matt's Self-help guide to Thursday Evening TV: New and Returning Shows

Maria Bello Now, the main event. No less than that's how Thursdays familiar with feel in past seasons. But in line with the early returns in this new season's ratings race, Mondays and Tuesdays obtain share of giant shows too, like the refurbished two and a half Males as well as the wonderful New Girl. This is a quick review of Thursday's programming techniques, with applying for grants tonight's aircraft aircraft pilots along with a couple of from the more notable returns.Thursday the end result is: Fox has formally grown its flag about today, while using X Factor and (from November following a World Series) the durable Bones. CBS acquired last season by moving The Big Bang Theory from Monday, nevertheless the feeble How to be a Gentleman (premiering inside a couple of days) reminds us how hard it might be to get the right companion piece. CBS' finest risk: Moving CSI in the evening to produce room for your offbeat crime thriller Person of curiosity. Look for The Mentalist, coming off last season's effective cliffhanger, to transport onto dominate, though NBC's Prime Suspect may lure away a couple of from the procedural crowd. On ABC, Grey's Anatomy remains jewel in the broken crown, stranded involving the moronic Charlie's Angels reboot as well as the insipid Private Practice. NBC's comedies nicely match the cult quota, even though shrill Whitney stays in most the wrong ways. As well as the CW's The Vampire Journals might be the night's guiltiest pleasure, sadly saddled getting an online clone inside the Secret Circle.Want more fall TV news? Subscribe to TV Guide Magazine now!Moving onto tonight's series premieres:Think MTV - just like, "mute your TV" - if you're inclined to check out ABC's laughable remake of Charlie's Angels (8/7c). My Fall Preview take: "The demon influences nuances of TV's latest uninspired reboot. Acting and writing? Mere afterthoughts in this noisy misfire. The casting lacks people essential star-is-born Farrah-mones. It's as being a USA Network show carrying out a lobotomy." To elaborate: Blech. There are many competition this season, in an Emmy magazine critics' poll, I ranked Angels as this fall's worst show. It is not only a lazy idea, it's atrociously carried out, pathetically socialized and cynically produced. The tweaked premise turns the title trio into awesome bad women, that's way beyond this cast's emotional range. With clumsily staged catfights and many types of the dramatic tension from the vehicle clean, this joyless retread is much better seen for pictures alone. Because when one of the Angels, grieving over losing among their team, emotes, "I i i never thought my heart could hurt much,In . I kind of felt the identical about my ears.Angels can be a textbook situation of accidental comedy, but it's almost worse each time a show thinks it's more amusing than. My Fall Preview two cents on NBC's Whitney (9:30/8:30c): "Like the noisy neighbor you have to keep shushing, the brash Whitney which is hyperactive laugh track are tonal misfits on NBC's evening of greater-brow humor. (Exactly why is not Up With The Evening on Thursday?) The star's abrasively kooky shtick frequently feels as if a stand-up working out her material." To elaborate: Don't expect a repeat of latest Girl's breakout performance now where Whitney is worried. Adorable is not a thing that readily involves mind when explaining the anxiously annoying character Whitney Cummings plays here. Depending heavily on sex talk and slapstick, Whitney might be the kind of show where less funny people surround the star, always departing comments on her behalf account zany actions. As her extended-suffering longtime boyfriend states after Whitney tries her easier to wreck a married relationship, "Wow, you're burning tonight. Exactly what are you closing with, blackface?" If possibly Whitney were burning. A great deal a lot more like a fire place purchase on desperate humor.Fortunately, Thursday's new dramas (Charlie's Angels doesn't count) boost the bar slightly greater. My Fall Preview undertake CBS' Person of curiosity (9/8c): "Color me interested - and intrigued. This really is really the rare crime drama that revels in actual mystery, its dark, paranoid tone embodied by two damaged heroes. Michael Emerson's aura of inscrutability is well-matched up track of Jim Caviezel's whispery, explosive intensity. I don't always determine what they're doing, however i am hooked." To elaborate: The climate in this who'll-do-it from J.J. Abrams' camping is less what formula procedural than from the high-tech thriller, as mysterious billionaire Emerson enlists a vigilante former special agent (Caviezel) to avert crimes that haven't yet happened, using special software to pay attention to "persons of great interestInch - whether they will function as victim or perhaps the villain is not quite apparent. Taraji P. Henson adds a Fugitive position becoming an NYPD detective on Caviezel's trail. CBS thinks a great deal in this show, they moved CSI to Wednesdays to produce room with this. One of the season's more interesting questions is if this gambit takes care of.A show by almost every other title might be less objectionable. In Fall Preview, I written of NBC's Prime Suspect (10/9c): "This otherwise solid whodunit will not ever approach the dark ambitions in the British classic, why think of it as Prime Suspect? Maria Bello, however, sticks out since the pugnacious detective standing with a cartoonish crew of Neanderthals in the office. In . To elaborate: No show will come across critiques for the brilliant original Prime Suspect, starring Helen Mirren in the career-identifying role since the groundbreaking yet deeply problematic Jane Tennison. (The first series remains released on DVD by Acorn Media which is well worth finding.) As Jane Timoney, whose primary vice is smoking - together with a addiction to a particularly unflattering hat - Bello is scrappy and intuitive, combative and fun to check out to use it, but her demons mostly are exterior, as she assumes a "beef trust" of grotesquely overt sexist pigs in the office who become they've never observed a woman cop. This around the network that has displayed the exploits of Mariska Hargitay's Olivia Benson for more than ten years. It feels awfully dated, except when Bello takes matters within their hands to keep things fresh.Returning Faves: The odd duck out as of this year's Emmys from NBC's Thursday comedy selection, Community (8/7c) can be as gloriously deranged of course since it starts its third season getting a musical number that promises, "We're gonna have an overabundance fun and be less strange," which very rapidly works out to become false. Fortunately. As Rob clashes while using new ex-disadvantage biology prof (Michael K. Williams within the Wire and Boardwalk Empire, inspired casting) and Dean Pelton crosses swords while using vice dean within the lucrative Ac Repair annex (John Goodman, also inspired), the surreal shenanigans are as intoxicating as monkey knockout gas (don't request, just watch). Best gag: Abed's reply to Cougar Town's programming worries, which prompts an homage with a certain award-winning British miniseries. That is this kind of smart, and ultimately endearing, labor of lunacy. It is then the return of Parks and Entertainment (8:30/7:30c), which finds Ron abroad from ex-wife Tammy One (a significant Patricia Clarkson) and Leslie in the pickle, worrying how she'll break what is the news to Ben that her lately fascinated political ambitions could mean the conclusion from the career-threatening office romance. But that's only a few of the scandal afoot. Hold back until you hear what Make the most of Lowe sights "the ears in the genital system." (But what's along with his floppy hair this season?)While Desperate Regular folks prepares to wobble for the finish line this season, ABC's Grey's Anatomy (9/8c) appears relatively robust within the eighth year, by getting an psychologically charged two-hour premiere that employs a treacherous sinkhole since the metaphor-of-the-week for your unhappy unique circumstances between Derek and Meredith similarly and Cristina and Owen alternatively. Neither couple is on speaking terms, with Meredith suffering fallout to get wrecked her husband's Alzheimer's trial (regarding the chief's wife) and Cristina still wavering on if you should terminate her undesirable pregnancy. It's a very baby-centric evening at Dallas Sophistication. Along with the fifth-year people are acting like children, shunning Alex to get ratted on Meredith and decreasing to listen to April as she haplessly takes the primary resident's reins. The comedy is a touch forced, but Grey's still knows choosing the emotional jugular if this must.Just what else is on? ... For people who can't have an sufficient quantity of this unfortunate story, Dr. Phil (syndicated, check local records) sits lower with Real Regular folks of Beverly Hills' Taylor Remedy with an exclusive interview, speaking concerning the turbulent marriage (carried out on television) that ended while using suicide of her estranged husband. ... Dunder Mifflin welcomes James Spader to operate (NBC, 9/8c) since the new Boss, but it's virtually no celebration when the staff sees that he's place their names by having an inexplicable list, stimulating a lot more paranoia than usual. ... Patrick Jane stays the fourth-season opener in the Mentalist (CBS, 10/9c) jail time for last season's cliffhanger shooting of Red-colored-colored John - or was that really him? Meanwhile, Van Pelt is at hardly better shape carrying out a dying of her dirty-cop fiancé within the same eventful episode. ... Earlier inside the evening, the Emmy-winning The Big Bang Theory (8/7c) returns with back-to-back episodes. Inside the first, the boys play paintball while Cent copes while using fallout of her misbegotten evening with Raj. Inside the second, Sheldon and Penny's latest quarrel tests the loyalties of Amy (the amusing Mayim Bialik). ... Adam Lambert can get judgey on Project Runway (Lifetime, 9/8c) since the designers create a look for this rock band The Sheepdogs. ... If Top Chef: Just Desserts leaves your TV sweet tooth unhappy, Food Network offers Sweet Genius (10/9c), a completely new competition series through which master pastry chef Ron Ben-Israel presides over dessert pros in many (what else) elimination challenges.Subscribe to TV Guide Magazine now!

EMMYS: Lead Comedy Actress Handicap

Ray Richmond is contributing to Deadlines 2011 Emmy coverage. Heres his scorecard assessing the Outstanding Lead Comedy Series Actress race. Laura Linney, The Big C Showtime Why She Was Nominated: Because, well, the TV academy couldnt very well not nominate her. Her role as the cancer-stricken Cathy Jamison in The Big C showcases Linneys mesmerizing acting range and depth. And shes also a three-time Oscar nominee. That fact alone earns Linney significant brownie points and makes her Emmy nomination a foregone conclusion no matter the project or role. Having a past cinematic pedigree remains plenty huge. Why She Has To Win: Simply stated, Linney never loses. Shes been nominated for Emmys three times: lead actress in a movie/miniseries twice (2002 for Showtimes Wild Iris, 2008 for HBOs John Adams) and as guest comedy actress once (2004 for Frasier). Shes won every time. Moreover, Linneys The Big C submission is the pilot episode that finds her shifting effortlessly between high emotion and dark humor. Oh, plus the past pair of winners in the category — Toni Collette and Edie Falco — hailed from similar Showtime dramedies. Why She Cant Possibly Win: Someday, somebody will figure out that if youre doing a seriocomic turn in a half-hour series, its likely more serio than comic. Falco said it herself onstage after winning last year for Nurse Jackie: Oh this is just the most ridiculous thing that has ever happened in the history of this lovely awards show. Thank you so much. Im not funny. Linney isnt as purely funny in her role as are her competitors here — and, well, this is supposed to be a comedy award. If that matters. Amy Poehler, Parks and Recreation NBC Why She Was Nominated: Poehler is no longer seen as a Saturday Night Live refugee but a primetime treasure in her own right. Her confidence and irreverence have grown exponentially since Parks and Recreation premiered a few years back, and this year she earned noms for both acting and as a series producer. Amy is just killing it every week on this show, believes an actor and voting academy member. Shes also surrounded by a hysterical and highly underrated cast. Why She Has To Win: Having now spent a couple of years paying her dues — and with five total Emmy nominations to her credit — Poehler is a known commodity whose genius has been anointed by fellow genius and best pal Tina Fey. Her episodic submission, “Flu Season,” perfectly showcases her comedy chops as her alter ego Leslie Knope fights off flu symptoms and her medications narcotic side effects. As if all of that werent enough, shes turned 40 on Friday, so the birthday gods are with her. Why She Cant Possibly Win: Buzz isnt always enough, particularly when youre surrounded by Linney on one side and Fey on the other as Poehler is this time. And again, the past two years this category has been less about bringing the laughs than it has the tears. Agrees a series producer, If theyre going to insist on giving this Emmy to someone delivering dramatic work, then change the name of the category to Lead Actress Doing Whatever. Tina Fey, 30 Rock NBC Why She Was Nominated: Are you kidding? Duh! This makes 19 Emmy nominations for Fey if you add them all up. Shes won seven of them, including lead acting for 30 Rock in 2008. She remains a comedic goddess also nominated for producing 30 Rock and guest acting on SNL (she lost). Over the past year, she also added a bestselling memoir to her credit sheet. A cabinet post cant be far behind, particularly if you-know-who makes a late entry into the presidential race. Why She Has To Win: This wouldnt be as major an upset as it might seem. Fey turned in for consideration a lively and energetic performance in the submitted episode that features guest Matt Damon playing her boyfriend. So theres the added star power. An Emmy-winning writer told me, Id vote for Tina Fey if she were nominated for supermarket checker. If theres a backlash against another Showtime actress taking the prize, Fey could again sneak in. Why She Cant Possibly Win: The vibe with voters is that theyve honored Fey enough. Shes already taken home Emmys in five different categories, for her acting, writing and producing skills. The lady also hasnt exactly been underexposed the past five years. After five years, Fey is likely in the honored-just-being-nominated phase of her 30 Rock life. Edie Falco, Nurse Jackie Showtime Why She Was Nominated: She won for lead actress a year ago, and Falco has proven an immensely popular performer with the TV academy over the past dozen years — so popular that she carted off the statuette for a role on Nurse Jackie that even she admits isnt at all funny. This is Falcos ninth nomination, and shes previously won 50% of time (including a trio of wins for The Sopranos in 1999, 2001 and 2003). Why She Has To Win: Well, as last years triumph attests, voters love Falco so much that theyll even honor her for her comedy when shes not trying to generate laughs. A producer tells me, I think they just voted for Edie last year out of habit, without bothering to check the show and the category. If it happened once, it could happen again. Why She Cant Possibly Win: But it probably wont. Linney will be drawing more of the serious actress doing quasi-comedy vote. It also isnt likely to help that in appearing so shocked while chastising the academy for awarding her when shes not funny, the love affair with Falco will diminish. Voters could well tend to believe her now. Melissa McCarthy, Mike & Molly CBS Why She Was Nominated: The newest kid on the comedy block received her first-ever Emmy nod for Mike & Molly in large measure off of her much-buzzed performance in the feature Bridesmaids. Heat continues to build for McCarthy as a talent, which is why she was able to overcome the stigma of being on a CBS series few are talking about. Why She Has To Win: An upset possibility looms. Of all of the contenders in this race, McCarthy may be the best pure comic. A contingent of voters will gravitate her way simply because she stars on a traditional comedy. Then there is her growing film resume (she’s currently shooting a Judd Apatow feature) and the sense that McCarthys star is about to shoot into orbit. A voting writer told me, I think Melissa will draw a lot of the young vote. A hit movie (Knocked Up) also helped Katherine Heigl win the Emmy for Greys Anatomy in 2007. Why She Cant Possibly Win: Its rare that an actress wins in her maiden Emmy voyage. The usual routine calls for a couple of losses before one is deemed worthy of drawing the winning hand. It also isnt as if the competition isnt thick. Barring a small miracle, McCarthys time lay down the road, though not that far. Martha Plimpton, Raising Hope Fox Why She Was Nominated: Some were surprised by this, but they shouldnt have been. Plimpton has been bubbling under the radar ever since she hit screens as a kid in the mid-1980s in The Goonies. Shes a highly respected talent who has drawn raves and Tony nominations for her Broadway work of late as well as plenty of chatter for Foxs Raising Hope. Why She Has To Win: A lot of people Ive spoken to positively adored Martha in the episode shes up for, says a fellow actor. Its about her character (Virginia Chance) struggling to get her family together for a picture, and its just hilarious. Having an inspired submission should count for something. In a perfect world, it would even be enough to propel Plimpton to a shocking upset win. Why She Cant Possibly Win: This isnt anything close to a perfect world. Having nothing to do with how good Plimpton is on Raising Hope, both she and her series lack the sufficient buzz for an actress landing her second nomination (the first coming in 2002 as a guest on NBCs Law & Order: SVU). This nom serves as category filler in terms of having a real chance, but the suspicion is that Plimpton will be back here again before too long.
